Earlier, the Minister of Education of the Arab Republic of Egypt Muhammad Ayman Ashur addressed the Russian Minister Valery Falkov with a request to consider the possibility of opening a branch of a Russian university in Egypt.

Technical details (opening dates, programs, training patterns, other organizational issues) are in the process of being agreed. At MEPhI, the project will be handled by Vice-Rector Dmitry Savkin, who also oversaw the opening of a MEPhI branch in Kazakhstan in 2022.

The main task of the Egyptian branch of MEPhI will be the training of personnel for the first nuclear power plant in this country, El-Dabaa, which is being built with the participation of Russia.

The development of the university's international branch network is a necessary element of the development program aimed at strengthening the international presence of the university and its transformation into a global technology leader.

Recall that the El Dabaa nuclear power plant will be built by Rosatom on the northern coast of the country, 3.5 km from the Mediterranean Sea (on the section from 149 km to 164 km of the route near the city of El Alamein), about 300 kilometers to the north-west of Cairo. The pouring of concrete for the first two of the four nuclear power units began in 2022.

As Russian Ambassador to Egypt Georgy Borisenko said in an interview with RIA Novosti: “Construction is proceeding strictly on schedule and even ahead of schedule, since the construction of the second power unit began 53 days earlier than the deadline that was originally fixed by the President of Egypt.”
