Method for Diagnosing Melanoma Developed at MEPhI Is Patented

The Federal Institute of Industrial Property has registered a patent for the invention "Method for diagnosing skin melanoma". It was developed by employees and students of MEPhI with the participation of doctors from the Central State Medical Academy of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation and the Medical Institute of RUDN University.

One of the authors of the development, head of the Department of Computer Medical Systems of the MEPhI Professor Valentin Nikitaev.

Among the authors of the patent are the First Vice-Rector of MEPhI Oleg Nagornov, Head of the Department of Computer Medical Systems Valentin Nikitaev, Deputy Head of the Department of Computer Medical Systems Alexander Pronichev, Professor, MD. Vladimir Selchuk, acting Head of the Department of Electrophysical Installations Valentin Dmitriev, as well as MEPhI graduate students Alexander Otchenashenko, Vladimir Kozlov, Alexandra Kozyreva, Mikhail Salomatin and Ekaterina Druzhinina.

The invention is a method for analyzing digital photographs of human skin areas using pattern recognition techniques.

The Department of Computer Medical Systems, established in 2000 on the basis of the Laboratory of Automated Image Processing Systems of the MEPhI, has extensive experience in introducing computer image recognition systems into the medical field. With the participation of the staff of the department, 18 patents have already been received in this area.
