The global rating agency QS Quacquarelli Symonds has published the results of the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

For the fifth year in a row the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI is in the TOP 100 of the QS Physics & Astronomy ranking.

MEPhI entered the six QS subject / industry rankings. For the first time the University has entered the rating QS Materials Science (301-350 place). For the second consecutive year it is in the TOP 200 of the QS Natural Science sectoral ranking. MEPhI has improved by more than 100 positions in the QS Engineering & Technology (290th) and 50 places in the QS Computer Science & Information Systems; keeps its position in the QS Engineering - Electrical & Electronic (301-350).

According to the rector of MEPhI M.N. Strikhanov, it is quite difficult for field-specific universities to achieve high results in the overall University rankings. To become a global University, it is necessary to develop not only their traditionally strong scientific areas, but also new ones, based on interdisciplinary. "For MEPhI the Project 5-100 is a driver of development, which is reflected, among other things, in the ratings. So, if at the beginning of the Project 5-100 MEPhI was included in only one rating, today the University is included in six subject ratings just in QS. A special pride is the entry for the fifth time in the TOP 100 of the QS ranking “Physics & Astronomy", said Mikhail Nikolaevich.

On February 27, International News Agency "Rossiya segodnya" hosted a video conference Moscow – London on the topic "QS Subject Ranking: movement of Russian universities", where representatives of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, "Sociocenter", as well as a number of Russian universities discussed the results of published ratings. Zoya Zaitseva, regional director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, participated in the event via video link from London.

According to the Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation M.A. Borovskaya, the demonstrated success of Russian universities is not the final result, but on the contrary is an opportunity to assess their potential and see what can be done more. This is a step-by-step summing up to determine the prospects for the future. The achieved results show that a complex, rather long modernization of the education system began to give effect. These are network programs, vertical mobility, and close interaction of all levels of education. The employer began to formulate his expectations regarding his partner – high school. And the fact when the number of academic experts and employers voting for Russian universities are growing every year, says that all the previous steps in the export of education have also been successful. "All these steps are systematic, consistent and I would like to see this success to continue."

Director of "Sociocenter" N.A. Polihina spoke about the importance of involvement of universities in subject rankings. It is the orientation of students and entrants to specific areas, a guide for current and potential partners, a demonstration of the strengths and progress of the University. The last is especially important for universities with a fairly limited set of research areas, as they can not always immediately demonstrate strong growth in institutional rankings. But the expansion of the range of subject rankings, which includes the University, can be a certain stage on the way to its conquest of higher positions in the institutional ranking.

Further, representatives of the University community spoke about the processes that have helped them achieve positive results, improving the global competitiveness of education and University science, as well as further steps that need to be taken to ensure further growth. Separately, all speakers noted the undoubted merit of the Project 5-100 in achieving such success of Russian universities.
