MEPhI is the third in rating of 100 best Russian universities by RAEX Agency
09.06.2018

On June 6, 2018 the RAEX/Expert RA rating agency has presented the results of VII annual rating of Russian universities. The activities of universities were evaluated in three main areas: conditions for quality education, the level of research activities, and the level of demand for graduates by employers.

For the fourth year in a row the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI takes the third place in the RAEX/Expert RA rating. The Lomonosov MSU is on the first place, the second is MIPT.

The discussion of the rating results was held at the VI international forum of universities, which one of the important topics for discussion was how to develop sectoral universities: to remain highly specialized or to strive for multi-disciplinary. This is based on the fact that, in Soviet times many sectoral universities were created. At the same time, some of them have significantly reduced their performance in recent years (some even lost their independence and were "merged" with other universities), while others have made substantial progress in expanding the range of training and research programs. One of such successful universities is MEPhI. Largely due to the participation in the Project 5-100, the University began to develop new breakthrough scientific and educational areas at the junction of different sciences. In particular, now LAPLAS trains specialists in the field of photonics and optoinformatics, quantum computing systems, laser thermonuclear synthesis, PhysBio prepares specialists in the field of nuclear medicine, bionanotechnology, and nanobioengineering.

Another topic for discussion was international integration. The report "Impact of the 5-100 Project on internationalization in MEPhI" was made by the Dean of the faculty of advanced training and personnel retraining MEPhI Kireev S. V. In his speech he noted that internationalization was one of the most important indicators for universities-participants of the Project 5-100, and in recent years MEPhI had made great advances in this direction. Thus, representatives of more than 50 countries of the world are trained in MEPhI. At the same time, the share of foreign students exceeds 20% of the total number of University students. A significant part of them are from the countries where the state corporation Rosatom (MEPhI is its basic University), is building or planning to build nuclear power plants and other facilities. Kireev S.V. stressed that Rosatom is one of the most competitive Russian companies and holds leading positions in the global nuclear industry.

In 2018 the RAEX Agency evaluated Russian universities on the analysis of statistical indicators and the results of online surveys of the following target groups: students and graduates, representatives of the academic and scientific communities, representatives of employers. 30,000 respondents took part in the surveys in 2018. The agency used the survey data of universities, scientometric indicators and information from open sources as statistical information.
