XII International Symposium RREPS 2017 hosts with the active participation of MEPhI in the DESY
26.10.2017

The International Symposium "Radiation from Relativistic Electrons in Periodic Structures" (RREPS) has been held since 1993, and MEPhI takes an active part in it since 2009. Employees of the Department № 67 "Condensed Matter Physics" if the NESPI MEPhI, the group "Radiation of relativistic particles" (team leader is A.A. Tishchenko) traditionally participate in its preparation and conducting.

This time the Symposium was held from 18th to 22th of September in the largest research centre DESY, Hamburg, Germany. The program committee included four professors of the Department №67, who were also co-chairs of the conference – Professor A.P. Potylitsyn and Professor G. Kube, as well as Professor M.N. Strikhanov and Professor S.B. Dabagov.

Young employees of the Department A.A. Savchenko, D.K. Danilova, D.R. Badreeva, and D.Y. Sergeeva received travel grants from DESY, and participated in the sections of the Symposium.

In total MEPhI group made 3 invited, 5 oral and 5 poster presentations, reflecting the latest results of research conducted in collaboration with groups from KEK (Japan), University of Oxford, Royal Holloway University of London (UK), and CERN (Switzerland).

The scientific program of the Symposium included the topics: General radiation properties from relativistic particles, Cherenkov radiation, Transition radiation, Parametric X-ray radiation (PXR), Diffraction radiation and Smith-Purcell radiation, Coherent bremsstrahlung and channeling, Crystal-assisted processes, Applications of monochromatic X-ray, gamma- ray and Terahertz beams produced at electron accelerators.

Sessions of the Symposium were held at a high level. Participation of eminent experts in the field – N.F. Shulga, X. Artru, H. Backe, A. P. Potylitsyn, G. Kube, W. Wagner, A. Murokh, S.B. Dabagov, A. Hartin, G.A. Naumenko, A.V. Shagin, A.V. Tyukhtin, - and the participation of relatively young but experienced physicists, like S. Trofimenko (Kharkov), L. Bandiera (Italy), A. Benediktovitch (Minsk), S. Galyamin (Saint Petersburg), P. Karataev (RHUL, UK), A. Kubankin (Belgorod), L. Bobb (Diamond Light Sourse, UK), A. Aryshev (KEK, Japan), M. Bondarenko (Kharkov), S. Shulga (Kharkov), R. Kieffer (CERN), K. Lekomtsev (RHUL), L. Sukhikh (Tomsk) and others made the discussions live, lots of questions evolved into constant discussions in the corridors and on coffee breaks.

Unexpected and interesting:

Prof. E. Saldin (DESY) presented the report with the theoretical results on the dynamics of relativistic particles in accelerators, which casted doubt on widely used methods adopted in this field of physics. The results of his work are so aggressive that the majority of physicists working in this field perceived it with hostility; meanwhile, in backstage conversations recognized that there is something to think about.

Professor A.P. Potylitsyn in the discussion section of the Symposium proposed the experiment with beams periodically modulated after passing the working section of the FEL (free-electron laser), which could be the direct test of the proposed by E. Saldin theory.

Prof. X. Artru (Institute of Nuclear Physics, Lyon, France) in discussion section of the Symposium paid special attention to the report by Daria Danilova (MEPhI, D.K. Danilova, A.A. Tishchenko, M.N. Strikhanov, Coherent diffraction radiation from bunch of correlated electrons). The report covered results of a study of correlation’s effect of charged particles in ultra-dense electron bunches. According to Prof. X. Artru, this study is important because it is future-oriented. Moreover, it is one of the first attempts to consider the effect, which is usually ignored and will have to be considered for promising and emerging facilities in the future.

The reports from RREPS 2017 are available on the website https://indico.desy.de/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=17328.

At the end of the conference the next International Symposium RREPS 2019 was announced. It will be held in Belgorod, in September 2019 with the participation of MEPhI.

In addition, Professor S.B. Dabagov presented the nearest and friendly for RREPS conference on the physics of channeling of charged and neutral particles and related phenomena: 8th International Conference "Charged & Neutral Particles Channeling Phenomena" (Channeling 2018).

Conference series of “Channeling” is traditionally held in September of even-numbered years, in one of the cities of Italy. The conference will be held on the island of Ischia, near Naples, in advance on 23-28 September in 2018.
