Second international summer school on Engineering computer modeling in MEPhI
18.07.2017

The Second international summer school on Engineering computer modeling has ended in MEPhI. It was held at the of Institute of Nuclear Physics and Engineering (INPhE) under the leadership of G.V. Tikhomirov and brought together Russian and foreign young professionals, postgraduates and undergraduates in the field of modeling of various physical processes and working with engineering codes.

During two weeks participants got acquainted with the possibilities of mathematical modeling of physical processes, including the issue of multiple simultaneous physical phenomena modelling (multiphysics problem), learned about modern Russian engineering codes (MCU, FlowVision, Fidesys, LOGOS).

Students from Norway, Turkey, Egypt, India, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Romania, Jordan, Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, Slovakia and Russia acquired skills in the use of engineering codes solving simple test tasks, individual for each program. The Summer school also included visits to laboratories of MEPhI and a sightseeing trip around Moscow.

On July 14, all participants received certificates of participation in the summer school.

According to one of the organizers, the General Director of the TESIS company Sergei Korsakov, three years ago the school was purely Russian, but now it has gained international status: “More countries are becoming interested to send its representatives to this event. I think this happens because the world is becoming more global, communicative and its participants want not only to learn something new, but also to communicate with their colleagues and coevals from other countries, to find common ground, and maybe even establish friendships.”

Being a graduate of MEPhI Sergey Kursakov is glad that the school is being held in his alma-mater and wishes it further development. “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate my University on its 75th birthday. I wish all the lecturers good health and fruitful work with young people, and MEPhI – to enter the top 10 of the strongest universities in the world.”

An organizer, the Commercial director of the Fidesys engineering company Maxim Sonnov also noted marked increase and productivity of the summer school: “MEPhI was selected to be the venue for this event due to its world fame in the field of nuclear physics and technology. We are always interested to participate in it, because people come from different countries and institutions. The digital economy is developing in Russia, and we are moving our innovative products on foreign markets, including such scientific schools organized by MEPhI.”

Foreign participants also shared their impressions about the school:

Abdelrahman Ghonim, Egypt:

– For two weeks we were studying multiple codes of mathematical modeling of physical processes. There were both theoretical and practical parts, where I learned to simulate processes of thermal hydraulics in the reactor core. This was my first experience using these codes, and I enjoyed it, especially Fidesys – it is a very friendly program.

I consider participation in this school as a very good and valuable experience. I participated in such an event for the first time and hope not the last. And I start thinking about entering MEPhI master or postgraduate programm. Now I am finishing my undergraduate study, so this question is very relevant to me.

Sindre Løver Hovden, Norway:

– A supervisor of my bachelor's thesis suggested to attend this school because it includes a SFD course. Now I am applying for a magister course, so these skills can be very useful for me in the future. And I really wanted to visit Moscow.

The school introduced us with five codes. I didn't use any of them before. I haven’t had much education in the theme of several proposed tasks, so I learned a lot, received good experience. We had very good teachers, they knew what they are talking about and always were willing to help.

I'm not sorry I came. I liked in Moscow. Here beautiful buildings, nice people... I visited most of the touristic places – the Red square, VDNH, different museums, the Gorky Park, and of course Kolomenskoye park with its nice wooden palace. The weather was not very good, but I'm from the western Norway, I'm used to it. I also met good guys from other countries, which is undoubtedly great.
