MEPhI in top three in rating of best universities in Russia-2017
08.06.2017

On June 7, 2017 the rating agency RAEX (Expert RA) has presented the sixth annual rating of Russian universities at the 5th International Forum of Universities "Global Competitiveness".

The top three leaders in 2017 did not change in comparison with the last year: they are Lomonosov MSU, MIPT and MEPhI. The winners of the rating are consistently among the best universities in terms of conditions for obtaining high-quality education and the demand for graduates by employers. In addition, MSU and MEPhI demonstrate the highest level of scientific research among all Russian universities for the second year in a row.

Within the framework of the forum, a panel discussion "Priorities of Universities in the Context of Three University Missions" was held, where the rectors of the leading Russian universities paid special attention to the University's third mission - its impact on society, as well as KPI options that can help evaluate it. MEPhI rector M.N. Strikhanov proposed serving the society as a third mission of the university. "MEPhI performs both a direct and indirect function of serving the society,” said M.N. Strikhanov, “a regional one, when it tracks the relevant social status of the regions, as well as the industrial one, developing certain industries." He noted that all three functions of the university - education, science and society - should develop harmoniously and be linked to a unified strategy for the development of the university.

Representatives of the university community also participated in two sectional meetings, where they stressed the importance of developing online technologies and open courses, exchanged experience in improving scientometric indicators, and also considered ways to increase brand recognition abroad. As part of the discussion, the Dean of MEPhI Faculty of Advanced Studies and Retraining S.V. Kireev proposed a new approach to assessing the publication activity of universities. Since many scientists read the articles and do not refer to them, it's worth adding new ones to the ratings used in the ratings (the number of articles and citation): the number of times a publication was viewed per one academic staff member, the number of views per publication, the weighted average number of views with a certain weight . This will make the publication activity of universities more objective in national and international rankings.

During the International Forum of Higher Education Institutions "Global Competitiveness" an awarding ceremony was held in accordance with the results of the sixth ranking of the best universities, where MEPhI received the nomination "High level of scientific research activity".

Rating RAEX (Expert RA) is an integral assessment of the quality of graduates' training, determined by the quantitative parameters of the educational and research activities of universities and qualitative characteristics reflecting the opinion of key reference groups: employers and academics, as well as students and graduates of universities. Higher educational institutions of creative and sports orientation, as well as higher educational institutions of power departments, can not participate in the rating. Assessment is subject only to head universities, branches of universities are not considered by the compilers of the rating.

In 2016, more than 28,000 respondents took part in the surveys.
