17.07.2018

MEPhI has expanded its representation in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (ARWU-2018), entering three subject rankings: Physics, Instruments Science & Technology and Energy Science & Engineering.

The University has not only improved its position in its traditionally strong "Physics" direction (151-200 place in 2018, 201-300 place in 2017), but also for the first time has entered two other subject rankings: Instruments Science & Technology (201-300) and Energy Science & Engineering (401-500).

In total, more than four thousand universities were evaluated. Sixteen Russian universities have been included in the ranking, among them the Lomonosov Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, HSE, MEPhI, Novosibirsk State University, MIPT, MISIS, TSU, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, ITMO University, etc.

In the 2018 ranking, universities are ranked in 54 subjects in the natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical siences and social sciences. Bibliometric data were collected using the analytical InCites platform. The categories of the Web of Science database correspond to 54 of the Shanghai Ranking (last year – 52).

"It is known that ARWU ranking is one of the most difficult for Russian universities, because this rating takes into account, first of all, publications in international co-authorship and in high-ranking journals, presence of winners of the most prestigious scientific awards, including the Nobel prize. That’s why it’s pleasant that MEPhI strengthened its position in this ranking, entering three subject rankings. Important role belongs to the participation of MEPhI in the Project 5-100,” said the rector of MEPhI Mikhail Strikhanov.
