On April 9, the Round University Ranking (RUR) rating agency has published the international university ranking for 2018. It includes 783 higher education institutions from 74 countries. According to this study, Russia ranked the second in the world in the number of participating universities, giving way only to the United States. In total, 70 universities from Russia participate in RUR-2018, 10 of which entered the World Top-500.

The Lomonosov Moscow State University became the leader among Russian universities (153rd place in the rating). The National Research Nuclear University MEPhI is on the second place (224th place). The top three closes by the Tomsk State University (240th place).

"Russian universities demonstrated the strongest positions in the field of teaching," said Oleg Soloviev, editor of the RUR rating. He explained that in the overall rating, the average position of the Russian university for 2018 is the 644th place in the world, in the quality of teaching – 471th place, the difference is "plus 173 positions". If Top-100 of the overall ranking doesn’t have any domestic University, the "RUR Teaching" have three universities at once: MSU (48th position), RUDN (65th line) and TSU (79th place). MEPhI takes the 123rd place in this indicator.

In general, comparing to the last year, the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI has risen by 7 positions, while since 2010, the University has grown from 475th position to 224th, that is 2.1 times. According to the rector of MEPhI M.N. Strikhanov, it does not give reason to relax, but only a stimulus to further work: "Ratings is a very powerful driver for development. Due to the Project 5-100 universities are in quite difficult years, because the situation is very dynamic. We must run as fast as we can, just to stay in place, otherwise you will be overtaken by others." At the same time, the rector noted that the ratings are not "a personal place, but a place in the group." It is important that the University’s position in the leading global rankings is about the same, which confirms the reliability of used methods and obtained results. Taking occasion, Mikhail Strikhanov appealed to the ratings’ authors with the proposal to move to parameters that are not subjective, such as reputation component, which has a lot of weight in the ratings THE and QS.
