The results of one of the most authoritative world ratings - the Shanghai subject ranking of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (ARWU) of universities - have been published. For the first time this rating included twelve Russian universities, eight of them are participants of the "5-100" Project.

"Today the output of the Russian version of the study is especially relevant - these days Russian applicants make their choice both of Russian and foreign universities," said the head of the "Social Navigator" Natalia Tyurina. According to her, the rating shows which world universities really have research potential and a serious academic reputation, what is important for graduates of Russian schools who plan to link their lives with science.

The ARWU subject rating includes: Lomonosov Moscow State University, St. Petersburg University, MEPhI, MIPT, Tomsk and Novosibirsk State Universities, Tomsk Polytechnic University, Higher School of Economics, MISiS, St. Petersburg Polytechnic University of Peter the Great, Ufa State Aviation Technical University and Belgorod State National Research University.

The largest number of Russian universities entered the subject category "Physics" - seven universities, five of which are participants in the "5-100" Project.

In this category MEPhI took the 2nd place among the participants of the Project, having entered the group 201-300.

It should be noted that last year MEPhI was recognized as the best Russian university in the field of engineering education based on the results of ARWU's specialized engineering science subject rating (group 301-400 on the subject "Electronics and Electronic Engineering"). Then only three Russian universities entered the rating.

"In 2017 for the first time MEPhI got to the Shanghai subject rating on "Physics", which, of course, is good. At the same time, it should be noted that for the last 3 years MEPhI has been included in the TOP-100 of two other leading global ratings - QS Physics & Astronomy and THE Physical Sciences. The difference in the positions of the university in these ratings is largely due to the peculiarity of the Shanghai rating, in which the presence of graduates and university employees who received the Nobel Prize is of great importance," said Mikhail Strikhanov, the rector of MEPhI.

He believes that MEPhI's entry into the Shanghai rating is due to the increase in the effectiveness of the university's scientific activity, in particular, the growth in the recent years of the number of scientific articles of the scientists of MEPhI in the most cited journals. "A significant role in this is the participation of the University in the Project 5-100, aimed at transforming of MEPhI into a world-class university," the rector emphasized.

The last ARWU subject rating was published in 2015. The ranking was carried out in five subject areas: mathematics, physics, chemistry, informatics and economics / business. In 2016 a specialized rating on engineering sciences was published. Universities were ranked in seven subject areas. The main changes in the methodology for the 2017 rating were the expansion of the range of subject ratings from 5 to 52, an increase in accounting for bibliometric indicators of universities from two to five years, as well as a number of changes in the indicators of the rating. In total, about 4000 universities were evaluated when the new rating was compiled.
