The seventh QS World University Rankings by Subject has showed a significant growth of Russian universities. The study, conducted by the QS Quacquarelli Symonds company, evaluated universities in 74 countries in 46 subjects. This year success of Russian universities is obvious: 28 Russian higher educational institutions took 147 positions in 46 subjects. The ranking evaluated universities according to four criteria: opinion of the academic community and employers, citation index and h-index, which reflects contribution of a scientist in science.

For the third consecutive year the National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI” enters the top 100 of the QS subject ranking in the direction “Physics and astronomy”. This year MEPhI has also demonstrated strengthening of a multidisciplinary approach: for the first time the University has entered the ranking in such subjects as “Engineering and Technology” and “Natural sciences”.

According to the University's rector Mikhail Strikhanov, a deep transformation of the University infrastructure, creation of five strategic academic units (institutes, which follow the newest trends in education and science) gives ground to expect further development of the University.

“It can also be said about Russian higher education in general, that is largely a consequence of the Project 5-100, which acts as the locomotive of the whole higher education of the country,” said the rector of MEPhI.

“Russian higher education continues to show substantial improvement, especially in the area of exact sciences,” said the head of the QS Research Department Ben Sauter. According to him, the value of such ratings in various academic disciplines is that they allow to get more in-depth information compared to general ratings. “This confirms that Russian universities occupy a worthy position among the best universities in the world at the level of particular subjects and sciences,” said the expert.

As the QS Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia Zoya Zaitseva noted, the increase of Russian universities in the quantity and quality is organic but not artificially stranded for many of them.
