MEPhI improves positions in global university ranking Webometrics

Spanish laboratory Cybermetrics Lab, which is a part of the Spanish National Research Council, has published results of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, which estimates universities’ presence in global internet space and has been published since 2004.

MEPhI has improved its result among world universities for 58 positions, lifting from the 860 to 802 place in comparison with the previous issue of the ranking. MEPhI has taken the 3rd place among Russian universities-participants of the 5-100 Project.

All in all, there are 8 Russian universities in the top 1000 of the ranking, 6 of which represent the 5-100 Project: Novosibirsk State University (548th place), Higher School of Economics (699th place), ITMO University (836th place), Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (871st place), and Tomsk State University (969th place).

Classical universities have become the best among Russian ones: Lomonosov Moscow State University, which took the 216th place, and Saint Petersburg State University, which took the 526th place.

Webometrics ranking is published twice a year, in the end of January and in the end of July. All in all, about 25000 universities are ranked in it. The published part of the ranking is 12000 universities. Its methodology is based on 4 indicators of different value: visibility – the number of references from external sources; presence – the number of web-pages, indexed by Google; supremacy – citation of scientific publications on the basis of analytical data of SCImago research group, and openness or transparency – indicator, using information from university profiles in Google Scholar citations.

It should be mentioned that MEPhI has improved its positions in comparison with the previous year:

  • by indicator “Presence” – 222 positions;
  • by indicator “Supremacy” – for 6 positions;
  • by indicator “Visibility” – for 128 positions.
